Our Paperboy Sucks

I think we have the worst paperboy on the planet.  Ok, that might be a tad strong.  I’m sure there are worse ones.  But ours still makes me crazy.

The positives.  We almost always actually get our paper.  That’s it.

The problem arises upon said deliveries.  See, the guy can’t seem to get the paper more than 10 feet away from the street.  We have a 15 foot strip of gravel (owned by the city) before our driveway actually starts.  The days that the paper actually makes it ON to the driveway are rare and amazing.  I know that this is a full grown adult, no some 13 year old trying to make a buck.  For some reason, in my head I see this guy trying to throw the paper with little tiny Tyrannosaurus Rex arms and that simply is as far as he can heave it.

Of course, that is not the case.  More likely he is just a lazy SOB.

This winter has been exceptionally bad with all the snow.  When you have to get fully dressed, including your shoes, in order to go out and get the paper, that is just wrong.  Even better, when there is 3 inches of snow on top of the paper so you gotta find it first then dig for it.  At least he can put the damn things in bags, but still.  I mean, we have a covered porch, a perfect landing spot for a paper to wait diligently for us to pick up.  I would love to just lean our the door and scoop the paper.  But obviously this is much to much to ask for.

So, all of you who could pick up your paper in the nude if you so choose, I envy you (I just don’t want to see it).

Four More Inches

When did Boise become Buffalo? Woke up this morning to find 4 more inches of snow on the ground. And, according to the newspaper, more is on the way. I gotta tell you, I am SERIOUSLY tired of it. We haven’t seen this much snow in forever. Get this, I actually made the comment to Jess upon the first snow of the season falling, “I like shoveling snow.” Wow. Let’s just say, I’ve definitely had my fill this year.

All I keep telling myself, only 194 more days until Maui.

Today is National Letter of Intent day for college football. Kinda like the NFL draft but for 119 D-1 football teams. I always find it interesting to see who Boise State is recruiting, who we get and who we lose. Especially interesting since this is the first real post-Fiesta Bowl recruiting class. We’ll be seeing these kids for the next 4 (or 5) years. Who knows what they will accomplish. Speaking of letter of intent day, read this article about a kid who committed to Cal, except for the fact they never recruited him. Very odd.

Update, here is a follow up article.

That’s all for now. I may have some comments about our recruiting class once it’s all said and done. Other than that, I’ll just be bitching and moaning about more snow.

Snow Casualty

We had our first snow casualty this past weekend.

IMG_2037.JPG The 3 year old canopy that is on our back patio. The snow had built up and built up over the past few weeks. All you locals know how much it has been snowing. Well, the design of the canopy was that it was a 4 cornered structure with a canvas top. But, with a lot of snow, the canvas has sagged. There are eyelets to let the water out, but unfortunately, they’ve been frozen over for months. So, even when the sun did periodically poke out, it would melt the top of the snow/ice caught in the canvas, but it wouldn’t ever go anywhere since the holes were frozen over. Thus, it just refroze and built up more.

August 16th, OK?

Apparently, I seriously dropped the ball. Who knew that my devoted readers keep on top of things, but obviously you all do. It’s not like we were keeping it a secret or anything and we’ve told anyone who asked. It just slipped my mind to put it on my blog. So, without further ado…

The big day is scheduled for Saturday, August 16th 2008.

We have been engaged for two full months as of this Friday. Presently, we have just about everything nailed down. Date, locale (for reception at least), caterer, photographer, DJ, cake, colors, dress, tuxes, honeymoon, you name it. I believe the only semi-major type thing left to do is flowers.

Yes, I’ll take full credit for getting all of this done. I’ve really been busting my ass, making decisions and calling all over town coordinating everything. I will say it has been kinda tough dragging Jess through this whole process…

Oh… Hi baby, didn’t see you there… a-hem… whoops… um… I mean… er… well, see… ahh… the thing is… uh…

Just kidding. She has actually been super efficient in nailing all this down. She jumped into the deep end and has done an amazing job. If it was up to me, we’d be nowhere. Getting married at the local Moose Lodge or something officiated by Reverend Skeeter, local pastor and tractor mechanic.

So, there ya go. You’re all up to date now. For the record, you’ll notice that I’ve added a new category to the right navigation called “Wedding”. This can be your conduit for all things wedding related here on my blog. Right now, this will be the only post in there, but stay tuned. More will be coming to feed you people’s voracious appetite for wedding details.

Aloha means goodbye

We have just had the umpteenth snowstorm so far this winter. My car was again frozen in place this morning. I’m tired of snow. I’m tired of cold. I’m tired of scraping my windshield. I’m tired of gloves and hats and coats. I am so sick to death of winter I can’t even describe.

Luckily, we’ve done a little something about that. Jess and I have settled on our honeymoon destination. And is it a doozy.

Maui, bitches.

I’m alive and other happenings

Ok, so we did survive the winter’s drive to Sun Valley this past weekend.  I have neglected to blog about due to the fact that I picked up a cold bug somewhere along the way.  It has kicked my ass this whole week, including spending Tuesday in bed.

Hopefully, I’ll tell you about our trip and show you some pictures soon.

In other news, my soon-to-be better half has decided to jump into the blog pool with the rest of us!  May I present to you… Winkle Wonderland.  Welcome to the club, baby.  You will find the link to her blog among the others on the lower right of this page.

Weekend Getaway

Last year around this time, I made my way to the valley of the sun.

This weekend, we’re swapping that around and instead heading off to Sun Valley. No, neither of us ski. We’re going to just relax… have some nice meals… do a little shopping. All the things a weekend getaway entails.

You’ll hear and see more about it when I return.

By the way, we’re driving, so if you don’t hear anything from me in the next few days, we could have slid off the road and are stuck in a ditch. Send the authorities.

Boise Snow

I know I haven’t written for awhile… it’s been a little nuts around here. Work has been super crazy and I’m still recovering from the holidays. I haven’t felt much like writing. But, since I needed to at least acknowledge the new year, here goes.

Happy new year everyone!

Ok, with that out of the way here is this.

Perhaps you remember this picture I posted last fall …

Well, we had a pretty good snow storm blow through here last night…

I think my plan is to do one for each season, then, get them matted and framed as a single set. Kinda cool, no?

Remember that crazy amount of work I have? Well, I had better get back to it. Even though it’s Sunday. *sigh* Tight deadlines wait for no man.

Christmas 2007

Christmas CardWe had a terrific Christmas around here. I hope everyone out there In The World did too.

Here is our Christmas Card for this Christmas!

Everyone who’s address I had, has probably gotten one by now. If not, I either didn’t have your address, or you didn’t send ME one, so you didn’t get one.

If you fall into that category, please accept this as our make up. Click on the card to the left to see the bigger version.

The newsletter reads as follows:

His side of the story…
This was quite a year for me. After a quite difficult ’06, 2007 promised to be much improved, and it did not disappoint… Beginning of course with the Boise State Broncos beating the Oklahoma Sooners in the greatest game ever played™ in the Fiesta Bowl January 1st. I was there to see it live. Definitely an omen of good things to come.

First and foremost, I suppose the biggest news is that I got engaged. Jessica (see ‘Her side of the story’ on the back) and I met in Sept 06. We seem to be a perfect match and enjoy a majority of the same things (although her predilection for trash reality TV is not one of them). As our relationship progressed, we decided to live together and I moved into her house this September. After a few short months of living in sin, I figured I had better make an honest woman out of her, and popped the question December 1st. Needless to say, it has been a pretty exciting month. We’re both very happy!

The other major change for me this past year has been the long awaited career change. After over 8 soul-sucking years of waiting to be laid off at the sinking ship that is Hewlett Packard, I finally decided that enough was enough and ventured out on my own terms. I left HP and was hired on by a company called Wirestone as a web developer. Wirestone is a marketing solutions company who works with Fortune 500 companies and is probably just about the best place to work on the planet. The differences to HP are night and day. I don’t think I could adequately describe in this space how great it is. For example, Wirestone sent all of their employees to Las Vegas for 3 days and paid for everything. The most I ever got at HP was the random Pot Luck. Needless to say, I’m MUCH happier at work these days.

Speaking of traveling, Jess and I ventured all over the west here. We went to Bend, Oregon to visit the Deschutes Brewery… Spring break was spent on the Oregon Coast. We spent her birthday week in June in Santa Cruz/Bay Area, California which was amazing. We had a conference in Vegas (my 2nd Vegas trip in 2 weeks counting the work trip). We also followed the Broncos to Seattle, Washington and Logan, Utah for football games. I’m excited to see where ’08 will take us!

Of course, if you aren’t already aware, and if you’re so inclined, you can keep track of what I’m up to (and read back to see what you might have missed) on my blog. http://jasonhaberman.com

2008 promises to be another terrific year. Wedding plans are progressing rapidly and are nearing solidification. Keep your eyes peeled for more information coming down the pike soon.

Jess and I wish you and yours a very merry holiday season and an outstanding new year!

-Jason

Her side of the story…
Well 2007 turned out to be a pretty big year.

Beginning last year in September when I went on a mini golf outing with some guy named Jason, to really liking this guy, to eventually figuring out this guy is the one, to this guy moving in, to this guy named Jason popping the question and me ecstatically saying yes! So now begins the whirlwind of planning a wedding and just being so dang happy!

Another milestone that I managed to hit was turning 30. It seemed to be easier than I thought partly because some guy showed me that 30 really isn’t that bad. So in June off we headed to California. We rented a beach house in Santa Cruz that overlooked the ocean and spent a week there. It was great! We really enjoyed that area and I’m sure we will be back. As you read from Jason, yes we have been traveling all over. Mostly surrounding some sort of football game but no matter.

Goldy (my “oldish” Lab/Retriever mix) is still clomping around. She seems to be happy and very excited everyday for her walk and of course any food that she can get into. She’s getting a bit slower but I think that she’s becoming more okay with just lounging around the house now that there are two of us around.

I am still working at CAPROCK and they are keeping me pretty busy. I enjoy working for a smaller office and being outside of the corporate world. Of course the downtown location is pretty nice too!

We are both (well at least one of us) are looking forward to planning the big day and all the details! We hope you all find yourselves well and have a wonderful holiday season and a great New Year.

-Jess

It’s Alive!

Quick news flash… In a near miracle, the beloved family Xbox 360 has returned from the morgue as happy and as spry as it’s ever been. You may remember that he was given his last rites and left for dead. Well, now it’s “Reunited… and it feels so gooooood.”

I couldn’t be happier. Just in time for the hours of vegging excellence I will have over my holiday break, too. I’m off work starting tomorrow, and don’t return until the 2nd of January. So, yes… this holiday season, all is right with the world.

Oh yeah, I think I’m engaged or something too…

By the way… Snowball fight!
