Crazy Busy

CSSFor the past week, I have been absolutely up to my ass in web development. Literally morning, noon and night.

See, I needed to get some pictures posted for AJsAngels.org from their recent summer fundraising events. I got a little ambitious and tried a new CSS photo gallery thing that worked pretty well, until I got around to testing IE 6 and lower. Then it crapped out. While I was trying to get that fixed, I got another little request that would take precedence.

When I interviewed with Wirestone last week, they told me that I would send me a .psd file (Photoshop) that I would need to work on. Okay… I wasn’t sure what that meant, but I would figure it out soon enough.

I Hate Summer

It’s official… I’ve lost it. Today is supposed to be 105° again. I can’t take it anymore. This will make I don’t know how many days so far this year in triple digits. The forecast for the Boise area the next few days is 105° today, followed by 103°, 101°, 102°, and 102°. Yay global warming!

I don’t do well in the heat. I have no energy. I don’t sleep for shit. I tend to get a touch cranky when we have day after day after day that feels like living in a blast furnace. Don’t you love getting out of the car and having your underwear damp? I know I do.

As many of you know, and the rest can tell from the various pictures of me, I’m what’s known as a fair skinned person. Ok, that might be an understatement. I’m white. Bright white, in fact. My ancestors came from them northern European climes where the sun doesn’t shine much and its cold a lot. Basically what this means for me is that I will sunburn in about 7 minutes of unprotected sun exposure. Of course, that doesn’t have to be summer exposure, as I have gotten wicked burns in the winter as well.

But, at least in the winter we usually have clouds and its not a thousand degrees outside. No such luck these days. They are bright and sunny, but don’t forget the lovely smoke from all the wildfires around… that’s always fun.

Top that all off with the absolute worst sporting month in the calendar and it all adds up to the fact that I just hate summer. The only good thing about summer is that it leads to fall, which is the greatest season ever invented. As much as I loathe summer is mirrored by how much I absolutely love the fall. But until then, its just me versus the sun.

The sun is my sworn mortal enemy. We are locked in a battle to the death and he will win. My only chance is to not give him the opportunity to bludgeon me regularly. So, I’m stuck indoors, valiantly trying to avoid the carcinoma that may strike me down.

And with only baseball games and SportsCenter trying to figure out who is more NOW (unquestionably the dumbest thing EVER), I’m slowly going mad. Check that… not so slowly. I am mad.

Someone… anyone… I’m begging you… do a rain dance. Sacrifice a goat. Do whatever it takes to get it cool outside. You will have my eternal gratitude.

Interview Follow Up

I just got done with my Wirestone interview. I can tell you one thing. If I thought I wanted to work there before… now, I know I want to work there. The guy I interviewed with was very cool. We spent a lot of time talking about the company, what they do, and more importantly their teams and culture. We spent a lot of time talking about me. They put a lot of value on finding a right fit for the team, and I totally respect that. Having worked with sticks-in-the-mud, I know nothing can destroy morale quite like a bad team member. I guess they know, as I do, that the tech stuff can be learned. I botched a few technical questions, but I hope he could tell I’m competent.

Perhaps it was during the discussion of computer gaming that sealed it for me. They’re young, they’re technical, they’re like me.

This place pretty much sounds like everything that HP is not. All I kept thinking about was the old Coach Hawk saying, “Bigger isn’t necessarily better…. Better is Better.”

But, I’m not putting the cart before the horse. He said he’s got a couple more interviews this week. He’s also sending me a doc to work on to show what I can do. So, I’ve still got more to do. Do I feel confident? Sure… I’m a positive guy. But I’m prepared for anything.

He also said there would be an interview or two more as well, provided I make it.

Keep the good thoughts coming. I appreciate them all!

Interview

Well gang, I finally heard back from Wirestone. They want to bring me in for an interview tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 9:00am.

A little background, I saw this ad posted to Craigslist and my eyes almost popped out of my head. It was something I’m qualified to do with the company I would like to work for. Perfect combination, eh?

So, I submitted my resume’ and cover letter. I had been in touch with them a few times, but finally heard back yesterday that the hiring manager wanted to meet me.

Anyway, if you got the time, send a few good vibes my way tomorrow, say 9ish.

Wish me luck.

Poor Micron

The big news around here in Idaho is the potential layoffs at Micron, one one of the largest employers in the valley. The Idaho Statesman has been writing articles all week about how the employees are nervous and how to survive layoffs and to find a new job, on and on.

Screw Micron and their weenie employees.

Now, I know some people that work at Micron and I’m not trying to say anything bad about them. But Micron employees don’t know anything about a shitty work environment.

Hewlett Packard, where I work, has been having layoffs… er… excuse me… Work Force Reductions (or WFR) for the past 7 years. I started 8 years ago when we were fat and happy. We were growing. Then Carly Fiorina took over and drove us straight into the shithouse. I think I have survived probably a dozen rounds of WFR, at least. Absolutely no one in the HP Services are safe. They even had one round of WFR that was only managers. NO ONE is safe.

Of the people I worked with in my first year, I would say that 90% are now gone. But, HP in their infinite wisdom spaces out those WFRs as to not really make the news. The downside of this approach, however, is that it never stops hanging over your head. Ever. You think that its fun to work with your head permanently cemented on the chopping block? Lemme tell you, not particularly. On my current web team which I have been on since it was created 7 years ago, we started with 4 people. The first one was let go maybe 4 years ago. Another was gone a year and a half ago. Leaving two of us… and as of 2 weeks ago, I am now the only remaining member.

As you can probably imagine, the morale around that place has been just stellar for YEARS. Every single person that I’ve talked to does not expect to be at HP for their career. Most are amazed, as I am, that we’re even still there. Everyone has lost close friends to the WFR process. Nobody knows when another round of WFRs will come or who will be hit. All anyone knows is that it is going to happen again. All this does is foster a very poor environment. Some people still try to care about the company, but HP does everything they can to beat that out of you. To be perfectly honest, those who are WFRed are more relieved than anything. At least they can finally stop thinking and worrying about it.

I wish I could work somewhere where I would feel valued as an employee. That would be a wonderful change of pace.

So, you wussy Micron people who are scared for your jobs, I don’t wanna hear it. Get back to me when you have been looking at layoffs which could come at any time for 7 straight years. Then, I might feel a little sympathy for you. Until then, shut it.

To California – The Cars

California Trip 109 One can not describe a trip to California without discussing what is apparently their state animal, the automobile. The number of cars in that state is mind boggling.

Our Rental Car

Upon arriving in San Jose and taking the bus to the rental car park area, we found Hertz and got issued a car. It was a decent looking silver Toyota Camry. We loaded our bags into the trunk, when I noticed there wasn’t any navigation system. I really really wanted one of these things for two reasons actually. One, we were planning on driving all over the bay area and sometimes navigating by traffic signs really sucks hard. And two, I’m a gigantic nerd and wanted to play with it.

To California – Accomodations (or “California Sleepin'”… thanks George)

This is a continuation of my “To California” series… click here to read ‘Dining’.

Months ago when we were planning this little adventure, Jess scoured the web looking for good vacation rentals. We saw places in Monterey, in Carmel, in Santa Cruz, and all places in between. She wanted to be right on the ocean… that was her main goal. Eventually we found the place we did. We were a bit worried because on the website where she booked it, there were no pictures of the interior of the place. They were all exterior shots. The description said it had been remodeled recently, but who knows what that means. But the pictures of the outside looked good, so, what the hell. We gave it a shot.

Here we were

California Trip 147 Now… this is RIGHT on the ocean. We pulled up in the rental car and were amazed at it’s location. It sits on a cliff about 50 feet above the beach and about 100 total feet from high tide. When I say we were close to the ocean, it’s not an exaggeration. More on that in a moment.

To California – Dining

Instead of doing the usual old simple chronological “this is what we did then” method of telling the story, I’m gonna go a different route. I’m going to do different categories instead. So, first up, is our dining adventures, although this will in fact be chronological… go figure.

California Trip 112 Pleasure Pizza – Santa Cruz
Jess was all geeked up to hit this place. It is her favorite pizza joint in the world, so it was our first stop. After getting to SantaCalifornia Trip 111 Cruz, we discovered that the place was just right up the street from us. So, we popped in for a slice. Lemme tell ya… it is good pizza. Highly recommended. But then again, I think I am addicted to pizza, so it has to be pretty bad for me to not like it (Papa John’s, I’m looking at you). This was right at pleasure point, and has a serious surfing motif. Boards and pictures everywhere. Nice old school feel.

California Trip 129 Margaritaville – Capitola
We popped into what one might think as one of Jimmy Buffet’s signature chain bars. Where it has the same name, this one is not actually part of that chain. Apparently they were grandfathered in. Anyway, this was right on the beach, and in fact had water right out the back of the bar. It was a nice little joint, and we ordered a couple mojitos and had some chips and salsa. It was the nice start to the vacation.

New Site Feature

Hi gang. As I’m working on my posts of our little California adventure I’ve added a little feature to the site.

If you’ve been here before, you may notice a new header image at the top of the page. In fact, now, you will get a different image every day. I currently have 4 images from our recent trip, but I’m planning on adding more. Current goal is at least 7, but I will probably end up with more than that. I do have some great pictures from my many travels, and that sort of fits with the “In the world” theme.  By the way, just so you know, every one of these images will be one that I myself took.

Hope you enjoy!

So… I didn’t post

California Trip 130 As you might have noticed, I didn’t end up posting anything from lovely California while I was here. Sorry to keep any of you on the string thinking there might be daily updates and pictures.

Basically, it boils down like this. a.) we had very limited web access here at the house. The signal was spotty at best. The last thing I wanted was to have a whole post done that I couldn’t save because the network was down again. 2.) we’ve been busy. We have gone somewhere and done something every single day. We simply didn’t spend a lot of time just relaxing at the house. And, IV.) I just didn’t feel the urge to make the time. Easy as that.

Now, I think I have a good enough memory to recall everything we did… which will probably end up in a gigantic post of about 8000 words. With all the accompanying pictures, of course.

Coming soon to a blog near you.

We head home tomorrow. Leaving the splendor of the beach and 70 degree days for the hell that is the 90+ oven of Boise. Ugh. Why can’t vacation last forever?
